Turtle Speaks, Hahnunah the American Indian Turtle

Overview

Hahnunah is a turtle who uses her voice and the vibrant illustrations on her shell to share the beauty of the Earth. When she feels saddened by the environmental changes she observes, she expresses her feelings through rich, sensory language that helps readers not only see but also feel the world's beauty. This character is inspired by a Native American Creation story of Turtle Island, and serves as a gentle storyteller, reminding us of the importance of protecting nature.

Author Information

Terry Graff believes that a good story can spark a lifelong love of reading, curiosity, and learning. With a background as a Reading Specialist, classroom teacher, and biologist, she brings a unique blend of science and storytelling to her work. Her stories are designed to ignite curiosity, foster empathy, and deepen awareness of the natural world.Terry holds a B.S. in Biology from Virginia Tech and a Master's degree in Reading from the University of Virginia. A longtime resident of Albemarle County, Virginia, she and her husband, Andy, raised their two daughters surrounded by the beauty of nature and the joy of discovery. Throughout her career-as both an educator and a mother-Terry has devoted herself to nurturing young minds and hearts. She continues to find endless inspiration in the way children view the world: with wonder, questions, and wide-eyed excitement. When she's not writing, Terry enjoys gardening, traveling, and spending time with animals-especially her dog Scout.Turtle Speaks is her debut children's book. She looks forward to writing many more stories that illuminate and inspire. I'm a Hungarian illustrator living in Indonesia in the past few years. I got my bachelor degree in animation at MOME, Hungary. During my studies I could explore many different techniques and styles and until now I cannot choose just one of them. I prefer to work with analog tools like pencil, pen and watercolour. I love illustrating because I can see different characters, different stories and different worlds coming alive.
