Overview

People experience injury, trauma, and sometimes a complete crisis. What do they do? Where do they go? How do they successfully manage the trauma or the crisis? How do families and loved ones help and cope? The current model of rehabilitation is insufficient. It ignores the potential for growth and fails to incorporate the survivor's personal experience of trauma and inner strengths in planning his or her recovery. MetaHabilitation(c) recognizes each person's inherent capacity to move forward, not in spite of the trauma but as a direct result of it. Individuals have the aptitude and inner force to move beyond basic survival and ultimately thrive. Life crises can be transformative. These unique and troubling experiences become opportunities to creatively restructure the self, find meaning, reduce suffering and allow each person to overcome and become master of his or her fate. Extensive research and interviews with ordinary individuals who recovered from major tragedies or trauma in extraordinary ways prompted the book. This work reveals insights and provides the basis of this concept and system of recovery. Troubling and unacceptable limitations in current rehabilitative models provided the rationale and motivation for a new treatment modality -- a system that specifically recognizes and understands the uniqueness of each person's potential, inner strength, and courage to guide them and families to achieve full and complete recovery-to MetaHabilitate. Author Information

Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of San Francisco (1976), a Nurse Practitioner Certificate from University of California, Davis (1981), a Masters in Nursing from California State University, Sacramento (1994) publishing the thesis: A Phenomenological Investigation of Near Death Event Survivors. In 2007 she completed her Doctor of Education publishing her dissertation: Transforming Life Crisis: Stories of Metahabilitation After Catastrophic Life Events. She held faculty positions at University of California, Davis: NP/PA program and Samuel Merritt College. Since 2005 she has been at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) in the School of Nursing. Currently a Professor at CSUS teaching courses in Neuroscience and Trauma Informed Care. Due to her area of research and expertise she focuses on the course she created: Traumatology: An Introduction to Posttraumatic Growth and direct application of PTG in recovery programs. Along with her FNP practice, she continues studying and collaborating with institutions and organizations focusing on direct clinical application of metahabillitation, a recovery system which supports and guides one toward PTG. She has several peer-reviewed publications and is a sought after speaker with over 30 podium presentations at international and national conference, lecturing about PTG and her unique system of rehabilitation, MetaHabilitation. Her publications include Nursing Times, Journal of Addictions Nursing, NURSING 2017 and her book: Turning Tragedy Into Triumph. Metahabilitation; A Contemporary Model of Rehabilitation.
