Wataalamu wa lugha na fasihi na mila za watu mbalimbali wametuzindua juu ya utajiri wa fasihi ya Waswahili. Katika fasihi hiyo, tungo za Kiswahili ndilo jambo lililojitokeza mbele kwa mwanga wenye kunawiri sana. Profesa Ibrahim Noor Shariff amefanya utafiti mkubwa kabla ya kukiandika kitabu hiki. Natija yake ni kuwa yaliyoelezwa humu yametufunulia mengi yaliyokuwa dafina. Tokea 1988 kilipochapishwa kitabu hiki kwa mara ya kwanza kimekuwa ni kitabu cha kukirejelea kwani kinaeleza yale ambayo watungaji wa tungo za Kiswahili, wataalamu, waalimu na wanafunzi wanaotaka kuelewa khabari za tungo huwa wanakirejelea mara kwa mara ili kupata jawabu za masuala yao. Kitabu hiki kimepangwa vizuri sana kwani kila maudhui yameandikwa chini ya kichwa cha khabari kinachoelezea maudhui yanayofuata. Hali kadhalika, kitabu kina mifano ya tungo za kupigiwa mifano. Yoyote anayetaka kuzungumza khabari za tungo za Waswahili hataweza tena kujadili mengi ya maana iwapo atajinyima fursa ya kusoma yaliyoandikwa katika kitabu hiki cha Tungo Zetu.

The title of the book can be rendered in English as ""The Art of Poetry and Song Composition in the Swahili Culture."" The book has four chapters. The first chapter has a brief discussion on the essence of the Swahili language and the Swahili indigenous people. Those who are familiar with the first edition which was published by The Red Sea Press Inc. (Trenton, New Jersey, USA, 1988) will find that the history and politics presented in that edition is in this edition much curtailed - which I consider to be a thoughtful outcome. The second and the third chapters offer details of the vocabulary needed in order to understand typical Swahili poetic forms. And I must say that the author's analysis of the various formats presented in the book is almost encyclopedic. Examples of poems and songs discussed, most which were composed by famous Swahili poets and song writers, are amazing; and the author's explanation is truly scholastic. In the fourth chapter, the author has sought to connect and explain how the lexicon used in the chosen poems and songs convey effectively the message intended by the composers; and this opens up an interesting study of Swahili lexicology! Because many of the examples of poems and songs presented in the book are from a number of dialects of Swahili, the author has provided at the end of chapter four a list of meanings of words not found in the Standard Swahili. As Tungo Zetu is truly a depiction of the art of Swahili poetry, I would like to recommend that this treasure be made available in every library of the institutions which offer Swahili language studies in particular, and African languages in general. - Professor Hassan Marshad

Profesa Ibrahim Noor Shariff amezaliwa kisiwani Unguja mnamo mwaka wa 1941. Amesoma katika skuli mbalimbali za Unguja na Pemba (Zanzibar). Baada ya kumaliza madarasa ya upili, amesoma masomo ya sanaa katika Chuo Kikuu cha Makerere na kupata shahada ya D.F.A. mwaka wa 1967. Baadaye amesoma katika Chuo Kikuu cha Rutgers, New Jersey, Marekani na kupata shahada ya Udaktari wa Ilimu ya Sanaa 1983. Alisomesha sanaa na Kiswahili katika chuo hichohicho cha Rutgers kuanzia mwaka wa 1970. Mwaka wa 1996 alihamia Oman na kusomesha Sanaa katika Chuo Kikuu cha Sultan Qaboos mpaka alipostaafu 2019. Profesa Ibrahim ameonesha kazi zake za sanaa mwahala mwingi duniani na ameandika mengi kukhusu Waswahili na fasihi yao.
