Overview

"Pele, the only three-time World Cup champion in history, died on Thursday at age 82 after a protracted fight with cancer. Brazil's President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he had a luxury many younger Brazilians did not get to experience: witnessing Pele play live. Pele, one of the best players the world has ever seen, has died at the age of 82. His playing career stretched more than 20 years, culminating with the now-dissolved New York Cosmos in 1977. UNESCO says Pele ""worked persistently to promote sport as a vehicle for peace"". He scored two goals in the final against Sweden when he was just 17 years old. He also dabbled in show business, releasing an album with Brazilian singer Elis Regina and performing in a couple of movies. Pele played 1,363 games, earning 37 championships, scoring 1,281 goals, including 92 career hat-tricks. In 1969, he became the first player to score 1,000 goals, at the Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro, known as the Mecca of Football. After retiring from football, he entered public service as minister of sports, presenting legislation that provides athletes their rights beyond a certain age. He led his country to a hat-trick of World Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1970, and remains their all-time leading goal scorer. He had been suffering from several diseases, including a respiratory infection, and was also suffering from heart and renal problems."
