Tres cuentos supone la culminación y síntesis de la maestría flaubertiana. Por el autor de Madame Bovary. Los Tres cuentos de Flaubert aparecieron en 1877 y, a diferencia de las anteriores obras del autor, la crítica los recibió con elogios unánimes. De algún modo suponen la síntesis del saber narrativo flaubertiano y están emparentados temáticamente o estilísticamente con su obra anterior. En «Alma de dios» se describe la existencia de Félicité, una criada fiel que envejece en compañía de su loro Lulú; «La leyenda de San Julián el Hospitalario» es un singular cuento medieval sobre un cazador sádico, en el que Flaubert extrae lo mejor de la literatura religiosa para obtener un relato moderno y sin intenciones piadosas; y, finalmente, «Herodías» es la revisión suntuosa del episodio bíblico en el que un Herodes inseguro y solitario no se atreve a ejecutar al hombre que tiene cautivo, al que algunos llaman Juan el Bautista. In many ways, they embody the synthesis of Flaubert's narrative skill and are thematically or stylistically linked to his previous writings. In ""Alma de dios"", the life of Félicité, a faithful servant who grows old in the company of her parrot Loulou, is portrayed; ""La leyenda de San Julián el Hospitalario"" is a striking medieval tale about a sadistic hunter, where Flaubert draws from religious literature to craft a modern story without pious intent; and finally, ""Herodias"" is a sumptuous retelling of the biblical episode in which an insecure and solitary Herod hesitates to execute the man held captive, known to some as John the Baptist.
