Reviews

The editor...has done an excellent job assembling leading clinical, administrative, and legal experts in the mental health field to create a cohesive, up-to-date, and timely volume. The book is well organized and clearly written. In addition, it is heavily referenced and meticulously documented....an excellent text. Mental health commissioners, clinicians and administrators who work with forensic clients, judges who preside over mental health hearings and the lawyers who practice before them, and graduate students in psychology and related disciplines will find Treatment of Offenders With Mental Disorders an invaluable reference book to have readily available. -- Criminal Justice Review
Treatment of Offenders with Mental Disorders is a timely and broad spectrum presentation of the pertinent issues facing providers of care to this population. The book is well organized, concise, and easy to read....this book covers all the types of facilities: jails, prisons, and forensic hospital settings, both inpatient and community-based treatment, providing a well-rounded portrayal of the many similarities and differences between these treatment facilities....should be on the required reading list of all corrections administrators from prison wardens to sheriffs to officers in the field. Medical and health administrators of these facilities should also be required to read this book. Clinicians who want to familiarize themselves with what happens 'behind the fence' or who are involved in providing forensic evaluations in a private practice will find Treatment of Offenders with Mental Disorders quite enlightening and informative. Many forensic psychiatrists have minimal knowledge of theprograms that are offered in the corrections settings to mentally ill offenders. Providing this information to these evaluators would improve the quality of their report recommendations. For those who provide teaching and mentoring to psychiatric residents or forensic fellows, this book would also be a wise referral. -- The Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law
This book is very useful in that it combines the clinical, legal and administrative issues involved in the treatment of offenders. The chapters are written by people with extensive experience in their special areas of expertise, e.g., dealing with sex offenders, inpatient correctional settings, juvenile offenders and offenders with mental retardation....The chapters have extensive bibliographies and can serve as a source for further research....This book is a very useful contribution, especially for professionals dealing with offenders within community or correctional settings. -- Psychiatric Times
There is a great need in the mental health field for a compilation of state-of-the-art, practical principles and techniques for treating mentally ill offenders. It is a complex subject that differs significantly from what nonforensic mental health professionals do in their daily work. This book, in my opinion, fills this need for both forensic and nonforensic mental health professionals. -- The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease
Wettstein presents a substantial group of interdisciplinary experts in this volume....The text provides a noteworthy menu of treatment options from programs around the US and from a number of other countries. It is required reading for anyone who wants to know whathas been accomplished in the treatment of this unique population. -- Readings
Serves as a strong introduction for any reader working in or interested in the field. The chapters review studies of existing treatment programs and often reflect the direct work and study of the authors. They also have a practical focus. The authors provide a thorough review of the development of treatment services for mentally ill offenders, and they also define the dual mandates of treating the individual and protecting society....will well serve any clinician or administrator working with this population. -- Psychiatric Services
.,. contains just about everything you ever wanted to know about the psychiatric treatment of people who have been arrested....there are more incarcerated individuals than ever in this country, and most states have well-developed treatment programs....This book will be very helpful to both the administrative and clinical staff who work in these programs, as well as attorneys and others who have an interest in offenders with mental disorders. -- Journal of Clinical Psychiatry
This volume is a serious, comprehensive, detailed collection, which incorporates biological and psychological perspectives and features extensive reference lists....Each chapter is substantial in length and includes recent bibliographic sources....Some of these essays may very well become classics and will surely be useful for graduate-level courses; they are imperative reading for professionals who work with mentally disordered offenders. -- Choice
A superb compendium of state-of-the-art clinical, legal, and administrative strategies for dealing with offenders with mental disorders. Comprehensive in coverage, incisive in analysis, and lucidly written, this empirically and theoretically sophisticated work has its feet firmly planted in practical application. Professionals whose work puts them in contact with offenders with mental disorders will find this a 'must-read' book, and one to which they will frequently return. --John Monahan, PhD, Doherty Professor of Law, Professor of Psychology and Legal Medicine, University of Virginia
It is quite refreshing to see a book about forensic issues in which extremely well-informed mental health professionals are focused on treatment rather than on lawyerly matters. The authors are all well known for their expertise and the book will add greatly to the knowledge base on treatment of individuals with mental disorders in various common forensic settings. The book also highlights ther
