OverviewStudents and clinicians find that reading the cases of real patients is an effective and enjoyable way to get experience applying the principles of differential diagnosis to a wide range of patients. Although the Casebook discussions often briefly mention treatment and follow-up, the focus is almost exclusively on diagnosis. The authors have selected the most interesting cases that cover a wide range of diagnoses. Following each of these cases one or more experts in that diagnosis will provide a discussion of how they would approach the treatment of such a patient. Full Product DetailsAuthor: Robert L. Anderson, M.D., Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, October 2004 This up-to-date and approachable compendium takes 34 case vignettes mostly drawn from the DSM-IV-TR Casebook and pairs them with stimulating treatment-focused reflections and reactions by renowned clinical authorities. Readers will appreciate the depth and breadth of experience and expertise that the contributors bring to bear on their respective topics and will especially enjoy their candid insights into both routine and difficult clinical decision-making processes that are faced every day. Their commentary is refreshing in that it stresses the useful and effective combination of psychosocial and psychopharmacological approaches to treatment, as well as the new era of maximizing client and family involvement in care. -- Kia J. Bentley, Ph.D., LCSW, Professor and Director, Ph.D. Program in Social Work, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia This book is a helpful guide to the diagnosis and treatment of a number of mental disorders and it's also a snapshot of contemporary psychiatric thinking. -- Russell G. Anderson, M.D., Journal of Clinical Psychiatry , October 2004 An exceptionally useful addition to the training of medical students and residents in psychiatry. One of the particular challenges to the teaching enterprise is finding clinically rich material to help enhance the learning process. This casebook provides wonderful examples from outstanding practitioners in every area of our field. -- Carol A. Bernstein, M.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Senior Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education, Vice Chair for Graduate Medical Education, and Director of Residency Training in Psychiatry, New York University School of Medicine, New York A superb volume filled with engaging cases taken from real world clinical practices, with commentaries on possible treatments. Through the cases we can see the structure of modern diagnosis and treatment, which now often includes a biopsychosocial approach. The volume includes interesting brief vignettes about the commentators--who constitute some of the best minds in mental health--which place their approaches in context. In a few fascinating and well-written pages, each gives us a sense of how he or she thinks through a problem. We see the complexities and ambiguities that make up first-rate clinical work, including its uncertainties. This represents a spectacular contribution by Spitzer and the outstanding editors. And, a great read! -- Jack D. Barchas, M.D., Psychiatrist-in-Chief, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York--Presbyterian Hospital, New York This book is a helpful guide to the diagnosis and treatment of a number of mental disorders and it's also a snapshot of contemporary psychiatric thinking. - Russell G.
