Treatise on the Sabre, 1842

Overview

Bartolomeo Bertolini was a fascinating character. He served as a soldier in Napoleon's army in Egypt and then as part of the French garrison in Haiti, where he was sentenced to death for disobeying orders - he was reprieved, after which he saw hand-to-hand fighting in a naval battle against the British Royal Navy. Once back in Europe, he fought in Italy, in Spain, and then served as an officer in the campaign in Russia, where he was captured (more than once) by Cossacks and had to escape. He rejoined Napoleon and was with the French cavalry at Waterloo. With his army days behind him, he opened a fencing school, and started writing. This book is a reproduction of Bertolini's sabre treatise that was published in 1842. It is presented both in Italian and in English, and includes a biography of the Master.

Author Information

Carlo Parisi was born in Northern Italy in 1974. He has always been interested in weapons and martial arts, and the two met in Historical Fencing, which he began practising in roughly 1998. A few years later, he started doing his own research, and became a member of HEMAC in 2003. Since then, he has been teaching classes at various events in Europe, and set up his own club in 2011. His main interests are sabres, smallswords, and daggers, but he studies a variety of other weapons and methods. He has been captain of the Vadi Italian Team in Hungary, Greece, and Portugal. Carlo later got into classical fencing, studying with Maestro Merlin, and his teaching now incorporates a number of challenging games. He has been teaching philosophy and history in high school since 2016.
