Treating Drinkers and Drug Users in the Community is the second book in a new collection from Addiction Press. Only just seen this classic - how have I have missed it? This book looks at a wide range of interventions that can be used to help different people with different drug and alcohol problems at all stages. A breath of fresh air and a 'must read' for all practitioners and commissioners in the field. First, it achieves admirably its ambition of being a thoroughly practical and eminently useful, modern guide to treatment and preventive work with alcohol and drug users. Secondly, an accurate empathy with the experiences of those suffering from alcohol and drug problems and a sincere respect for them as unique individuals is obvious on every page. For these reasons alone, the book is highly recommended for specialists in the field and those generalists who come into contact with alcohol and drug problems in their work. The evidence in support of the treatments is well presented and the book is superbly referenced, acting as a valuable resource for further study. The book is well written and is accessible to professionals and the general public. It goes without saying that this book will provide an invaluable source of information. moreover it is a scholarly text and extremely well written. Author Information
Tom Waller, MBBS, DObstRCOG, was a GP, lecturer and tutor in Central London 1973-88 and a GP in Suffolk from 1988-96. He developed an interest in substance use when he became first medical adviser to a short-stay hostel for drug users in crisis in 1978 and used this experience in his own general practice. He was a member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs from 1983-88 and 1993-96. In 1996 he became Suffolk County Specialist for problem substance use. Daphne Rumball MB, ChB, DRCOG, FRCPsych is a consultant psychiatrist in Norfolk Mental Health Care NHS Trust, specialising in drugs and alcohol, and working with a multi-disciplinary team in a large urban and rural practice in Norwich. She is also an honorary academic adviser and tutor at the School of Medicine, University of East Anglia.
