OverviewWhat could the following people have in common: a member of the Hitler Youth; a young couple pregnant before marriage; a woman and a chaplain in an ICU; a bride pouring communion wine all over her gown; a long-haul trucker baptized in a birdbath; a college kid arrested for being disorderly; and a Holocaust survivor meeting his rescuer after sixty-five years? Saint Paul would make the list. Writing after his conversion, Paul explains, ""For I am the least of the apostles because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God, I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain"" (1 Cor 15:9-10). This good news of God is the treasure ordinary Christians have proclaimed and shared throughout history. In these pages, Joe offers us stories that try to point us to truth about faith and ourselves. Because after all, isn't that the point of every story? To tell us something true (even if it's not factual) and, at the same time, reveal to us something true about ourselves. Joe offers the reader a gift and the real possibility of growth. Enjoy. --Gene Kern, Transition Facilitator for Faith Communities Joseph Vought understands that the Christian faith is more than intellectual assent to a series of propositions. In this collection of sermons, Pastor Vought puts flesh on dry doctrinal bones by introducing the reader to people in whose lives the gospel has taken a very specific shape. He shows himself to be the kind of preacher the twenty-first-century church needs. --Mark W.
