OverviewEl tumor neuroendocrino de recto es una neoplasia rara que alcanza una incidencia entre el 1% y el 4 % en las diferentes series. La prevalencia de estos tumores es dificil de determinar. Constituyen el tipo histologico mas agresivo entre las neoplasias rectales, siendo los de diseminacion mas precoz y pronostico mas infausto. La clinica de presentacion de estos tumores no difiere de la de los adenocarcinomas de colon. Sin embargo, podemos hallar en el momento del diagnostico un estadiaje del tumor mas avanzado. Son el dolor abdominal, la hematoquecia, las alteraciones del habito intestinal, la sangre oculta en heces o la presencia de una masa los signos y sintomas que ponen al clinico en alerta, y raramente existen sintomas de sindrome paraneoplasico, carcinoide ni anormalidades metabolicas. El higado es el primer lugar de asiento de las metastasis, como en los adenocarcinomas de tipo exocrino. El diagnostico precoz puede mejorar la supervivencia de los pacientes, siendo la cirugia, mediante diferentes tecnicas el unico tratamiento efectivo hasta el momento. Medidas paliativas quirurgicas como la confeccion de colostomias o los tratamientos radioterapicos deben ser evaluadas para mejorar la calidad de vida del paciente afecto de estos tumores. In 2009, he received his medical degree from Seville University. He joined University Hospital Virgen del Rocio in 2010, where he conducted his training on Digestive and General Surgery, being part of the Liver Transplant Program of this center. He has completed his learning and performed part of his research in prestigious foreign institutions as Georg-August-Universitat in Gottingen (Germany) and St Mark's Hospital & Northwich Park in London (United Kingdom). He has conducted his research as part of the Advanced surgery and transplant, cell therapy and bioengineering applied to surgery research group of Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS). Where he focused his inquiry on alginate-based biomaterials and growth factors for tissue regenerations, his work on this field, using PRGF in fistula-in-ano, granted him a PhD Cum laude by the University of Seville. His workks related to telesurgery have concluded in the development of an app for postoperative follow-up. Since he joined Hospital Universitatio Son Espases, his research has focused on trauma surgery. He is currently analyzing the balconing phenomenon and developping a new approach to liver trauma in porcine model at Instituto de Investigacion Sanitaria de Palma (IdISPa). He has also published over 30 papers and book chapters in national and international journals, presented more than 70 podium presentations in congresses. He is also a member of several associations, obtaining different awards and scholarships from Spanish and Andalussian surgical societies and from University Hospital Son Espases.
