Overview

The predominant hetero normative culture of the civilized world maintains that there are only two genders, which are acceptable (Kitzenger, 2005). As 'different' transgender identities have gained increased visibility since the late 1980s, defining gender has become extremely complex in the twenty-first century. Traditionally, gender reflects 'biological sex', and that sexual attraction to 'opposite' sex only, is considered normal in a binary gendered world. We need to come to terms with a multiple ways in which gender finds expression in the contemporary world. We are all conditioned to look at gender as a discrete binary construct rather than fluid where as all other physical and psychological dimensions like height, weight, IQ, social intelligence, aptitude etc are seen along a continuum. The intensely personal world of gender norms is challenged by individuals who identify as trans people/ transgender individuals. However, transgender is generally described as an 'umbrella' term for persons whose gender identity (the gender with which they identify) and gender expression (an individual's outward gender presentation like clothing, body language, hair style) does not conform to the sex (gender) assigned at birth. For example: a person born with male genetilia and therefore assigned to be a male, may harbor feelings of intense feminity and look upon them self or perceive them self as a woman rather than a man (Gender identity). They may also prefer to dress like a woman, have long hair, pierced ears (Gender expression) and also engage in behaviors stereotypically associated with women like body language, softness.
