Reviews

This work is a wholly interesting investigation and association of Unamuno and Camus, providing both an unusual and effective insight into two much-visited authors and an original (and nicely non-metaphysical) understanding of the idea of tragedy in a twentieth-century socio-political context. Its reader will obtain at once a useful overview of modern ideas of the tragic and a provocative entry to the writing and political activities of two major twentieth-century European authors. (Timoth J. Reiss, New York University) Hansen's theory of tragic lucidity helps us to read some of the greatest works of twentieth-century philosophical fiction in a new light, portraying Unamuno and Camus as participants in a clearly-defined Western tradition. His approach also takes into account the impact of modernism and colonialism on the tragic paradigm, pointing out little-explored similarities between the two thinkers' lives and works. (Kenneth Krabbenhoft, New York University)
