Overview

A practical guide to the complex world of traffic engineering and management Traffic Engineering and Management gives a comprehensive overview of traffic engineering and management practice. It provides guidance in the planning, design and operation of traffic systems in a single text, letting the reader gain a broad background understanding of the subject quickly and easily. It is written for students entering the traffic profession, new professionals embarking on their career, and existing traffic engineers and transport professionals. Building on the success of previous editions, this book covers essential components of traffic engineering practice, including human factors, road and intersection design, signage and information systems, traffic management approaches, local area traffic management, planning for disruption and special events, analytical techniques, traffic surveys, road safety, and guidance for all road users. Traffic engineering rules of thumb are captured in an updated version of the much-loved folklore section. The 2017 edition reflects the latest developments in the management of road traffic systems. It adds new sections on network operation plans, the Safe System, and the multimodality of the transport system, and includes a more active consideration of the rapid developments in new and emerging technologies. In particular, this edition has a strong people-oriented perspective. It recognises the important role of the community and stakeholders in decision-making, and the growing importance of place and amenity in the traffic system. Each chapter is written by leaders in the respective field, including representatives of state and local government, the Australian Road Research Board, transport industry organisations, private consultancies and universities. If you want to brush up on your fundamentals or keep abreast of contemporary practice, you will want this book on your shelf. It is a must-read for the contemporary traffic planner, designer, system operator and engineer.
