Overview

The McCormicks flee Glasgow towards the close of the nineteenth century. They head for America, the New World. Desperate to improve their lot they are unprepared for what happens next. Father and son start a farm in the Chilean wilderness. The Cordners decide to move from Dublin, Ireland; to Argentina at the turn of the century and make good with effort and imagination. Andrew from Chile marries Winifred in Argentina. What should have been a marriage made in heaven isn't. Winifred flees to Rhodesia to join her father and sister. The story is focused on the exploits of her twin sons, one of whom heads the next generation with character. His family of four produces two sets of grandchildren. His talented wife makes a mark on the artistic world. The story continues with the travails of following generations in topsy-turvy Africa.
