OverviewMercury is both widespread and persistent in today's environment. Methylmercury, one organic form of mercury, can accumulate in the food chain of aquatic ecosystems and contaminate predatory fish, due largely to the emissions of fossil-fuel power plants. Consumption of these contaminated fish is the major source of human exposure to methylmercury in the United States. This highly toxic compound can produce adverse neurodevelopmental effects in humans, including mental retardation, cerebral palsy, deafness and blindness. Toxicological Effects of Methylmercury contains recommendations on the establishment of a scientifically appropriate methylmercury exposure reference dose, based its health effects, target organs, and endpoints of toxicity.
