Interior design, as a relatively young discipline within the academic world of design, has historically been interpreted as an extension of other fine arts. Narratives exist, but they all too often treat interior design as a function of architecture or display rather than experience. An independent interior design theory is virtually nonexistent. Professor Lois Weinthal envisions a future where interior design is treated with parity to architecture and industrial design, a future with a new interior. A reader for architects and interior designers, Weinthal has carefully curated a collection of forty-eight essays that will form the foundation of interior design theory and shape future interior space. Her introductory essays illuminate each source, prefacing and directing discussion of the material as it relates to interior design theory. Alluding to Le Corbusier s classic text, she has organized this material into a framework that inspires conversation, marking a break with the past and forming a new vocabulary for the discourse. Author Information

Lois Weinthal is Associate Professor and Graduate Advisor for the Master of Interior Design Program in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin where she has been teaching since 1999. From 2007 - 2009 she was Director of the BFA and MFA Interior Design Programs at Parsons The New School for Design where she co-developed the graduate program. Weinthal is particularly interested in the relationships between architecture, interiors, clothing and objects, resulting in works that are linked through questions and curiosities and implemented though design projects that take on an experimental nature. Weinthal has received grants from the Graham Foundation, a Fulbright Award, and a DAAD Award for residency in Berlin that led to the exhibit, 'Berlin: A Renovation of Postcards.' In 2007, she curated 'Architecture Inside/Out' at the Center for Architecture in New York City. She has lectured, published, and exhibited widely in the field, and is principal of the design practice Weinthal Works. She studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Weinthal has traveled to Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, China, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Scotland and Sweden to research interior spaces. She has lived on and off in Berlin and has taught in Germany and Italy.
