Overview

Religion and spirituality are still among the most common motivations for travel. Many major tourism destinations have developed in large part as a result of their connections to sacred people, places and events. This volume draws together a distinguished list of contributors to examine the global phenomena of religious tourism, ranging from indigenous spirituality through to Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism and Christianity. Written in two parts, the first highlights the broader conceptual underpinnings, debates and paradigms, whilst the second examines the tourism and pilgrimage implications of official doctrine, scripture/holy writ, traditions and religious practices of some of the world's main religions. In parts the editors have enlisted the empirical work of scholars who not only research certain faiths, but who also adhere to them. Examining and challenging the existing concepts and practices related to religious travel, pilgrimage and spiritually motivated travel, Olsen and Timothy raises significant and interesting questions, not the least of which involves the attitudes of different religious groups and authorities to tourism and tourists.
