Hill gives us time to become acquainted with her characters as we would friends and neighbours, drawn to some, repelled by others. Fiction imitates life with easily relatable scenarios of trauma, grief, yearning and love. Characters navigate highs and lows, occasionally learning overdue lessons in surprising ways. Christie Hartlin, author of Steeped in Stories Beau and Claire develop their relationship as one might develop a film found in an old camera, taken some seventeen years earlier...with caution and care. Beau has always been sure of his love for Claire. She is more stand-offish, perhaps because she moved home with a secret. Will her new tattoo give that secret away? I am drawn to stories with a hint of reality. This story offer a strong dose of reality woven into a delightful fiction. I was shocked to read the cliff hanger when I turned to the last page.
