Overview

For many years, it was common for people who visited the wild California desert to grab a tortoise as a souvenir. Desert tortoises are charismatic animals. The hatchlings are unbelievably cute. And the species was once so abundant that residents in Joshua Tree, California, used to collect wild tortoises the first weekend each May, paint their shells, and set them to race against each other. Punctuated by generous amounts of beer, this festival was called Turtle Days, and was used as a marketing tool to entice visitors to the desert.
