Topsey: A Parable of Hope for People with Disabilities

Overview

When Topsey loses his sight, his once-bright ocean becomes a world of shadow and sound. Yet in the darkness, he begins to discover new ways of seeing-through touch, through rhythm, and through the love of friends who refuse to let him drift away. Around him, other sea creatures wrestle with their own challenges: Tivey, who cannot swim; Stingray, who cannot defend herself; and Angler Fish, whose extra teeth slow her down but may hold an unexpected gift. Together, they learn that brokenness can be a beginning, not an end. Inspired by true events, Topsey the Blind Sea Turtle is a tender parable of loss and renewal, courage and connection. It reminds us that when the light we know fades, another form of beauty waits to be found-one painted not with sight, but with the heart.

Author Information

Nancy McCurtin became totally blind in April 2016 and found it very difficult to begin a new life as an older person who was completely blind. Nancy struggled with daily activities of food, clothing, not being able to drive to the store, etc.-all those things we take for granted. As she learned how to cope with life at a much slower pace, Nancy thought about the children's tale ""The Tortoise and the Hare."" She used to be the hare, darting around to do volunteer activities, babysitting her grandchildren, and church activities. Now she feels like the tortoise, who has to take one slow step at a time. She decided to tell the story of her new life through the life of Topsey the Sea Turtle, who became completely blind. How could Topsey maneuver around the ocean with no sight? How would Topsey know if danger was near? How would Topsey find his food? This story will answer these questions and show how Topsey was able to able to survive.
