This title is part of a six-book series on standard American sports (other entries cover baseball, basketball, football, gymnastics, and hockey) presenting twenty-five informative points in forty-eight pages. Brief paragraphs, boxes with facts, tips, or historical information and photos of major stars or action snapshots cover the basics of each sport. A one-page glossary of main terms, a short list of similar books, several Internet addresses, and an index complete the coverage. Savage provides a good introduction to soccer emphasizing individual skills that make a player valuable in this team sport. In Controlling the Ball, Savage covers dribbling, changing speed and direction, shielding and receiving. He explains various forms of passing the ball and throw-ins leading up to where, when, and how to shoot for a goal. A good section on preventing a goal where defenders can be as important as goal scorers is a welcome addition. There are many words of advice to beginners throughout the text. The photos of both male and female players are adequate but sequenced photos would be more helpful. If your budget is limited and you need an overview of the sport, try Soccer (DK Eyewitness Books). If your collection already has titles covering basic soccer skills, this series entry should be considered supplemental., Children's Literature
