OverviewThe non-language utterances practiced today by large religious groups is not the true gift of tongues. The non-language utterances (babbling) is a counterfeit gift of tongues and is being misrepresented as the true gift. God's word clearly shows the gift of tongues to be the ability to speak a foreign language one had not learned. The apostle Paul addressed the problem of misuse of the true gift of tongues in his first epistle to the Church at Corinth. Paul's discussion in 1 Corinthians 14 on the issue of tongues was directed to a people who had the true gift but were in error because they were using it in the Church when it was not needed. The Chapter included a very serious warning of God's judgment on the Church if the error was not corrected. God's warning of judgment by misuse of the true gift of tongues was of a serious nature. How much more serious is that warning to those who practice the counterfeit gift and misrepresent it as the true gift. Scriptures used by those who practice counterfeit tongues use scriptures that do not reference the true gift. Those verses are also addressed in this publication.
