Tommy Johnson and the Weird Fog

Overview

Tommy Johnson spent all his afternoons at the beach, searching for shells, arrowheads, and unusual stones. Exploring helped him cope with the boys at school who teased him for being different, and that his father was away fighting in Vietnam. Looking out, with his binoculars, at the water, he notices a strange dark, weird fog. Where did it come from? Why does the fog have lighting and crackling sound? Suddenly, he saw a strange old wooden ship with three masts flying a Skull and Crossbones flag sailing out of the fog with a dragon head at the bow. Could it be a PIRATE SHIP? thought Tommy. Then the adventure begins!

Author Information

Innoccenza Gennusa Gatto was born in a small village in the hills of Sicily, Italy, called Bisacquino. Her fondest memory was waking up on Sunday morning with the smell of tomato sauce bubbling on the stove and homemade bread. Her mother was at the kitchen table rolling out dough to make pasta noodles. She and her family would dress up in their best clothes and walk down to their church, ""Mother Church of Bisacquino"", in the Piazza, the center of their village.Innoccenza's father found living in their little village difficult, he needed to save money for his daughter's dowries. So a decision was made to travel to America, there were more opportunities for work. Innoccenza's mother, father, and five sisters traveled on the S.S. Marine Perch Cargo Ship. It was the first time they saw the Atlantic Ocean, with its blue water and white cap waves.Innoccenza and her father spent many hours walking around the deck of the ship. She still loves riding in a boat on the Long Island Sound, near her home in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
