War and Peace was first published in 1869, but Tolstoy also wrote other classics, including Anna Karenina. During trips to Europe, he met and was influenced by Victor Hugo, as well as the anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Tolstoy eventually died in 1910 from pneumonia.
