OverviewThe Tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) is a large, visually striking gecko species native to Southeast Asia, including countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and parts of India and Bangladesh. These geckos primarily inhabit tropical rainforests, monsoon forests, limestone cliffs, and tree-rich lowlands, although they have also adapted well to human settlements, frequently occupying urban environments such as the walls and ceilings of rural homes and buildings. In their natural habitat, Tokay geckos live in crevices, under bark, inside hollow trees, or behind shutters and roof tiles. They are predominantly arboreal and favor vertical spaces with high humidity and consistent temperatures. Tokay geckos are nocturnal, and their behavior is deeply rooted in their environment. The tropical climate they are adapted to includes ambient temperatures between 75°F and 85°F, high humidity ranging from 60% to 80%, and dense foliage or tree canopies for coverage. Their reliance on humidity and ambient warmth is critical for regulating body temperature, shedding, and respiratory health. Tokays are highly territorial and will defend their space aggressively, both in the wild and in captivity, which significantly impacts housing decisions in a captive environment.
