Overview

Toby, the Terrific and Talented T-Rex FEELS a lot of things very much. As Toby and his mother explore the world, he discovers textures, sounds, and smells that just don't feel very good. In fact, they can be scary. Toby is comforted by his mother and learns that he can take breaks to calm his body. Exploration and adventures are fun, and you set your own pace. That's okay because SOMETIMES THE WORLD CAN FEEL LIKE TOO MUCH! One in six children has sensory processing difficulties. In specific populations, the prevalence is estimated to be as high as 80% to 100% and includes children with autism spectrum disorder, or who have a history of prematurity, fetal alcohol syndrome, or Down syndrome, just to name a few. The percentage of children with disabilities has increased over the last decade. Recent estimates in the United States show that about one in six, or about 17%, of children aged 3 through 17 have one or more developmental disabilities. Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. Now is the time to have healthy conversations with our children about differences.

Author Information

Susan Mills is the proud mother of her incredible son, Alex, and has dedicated her life to being an advocate for him, and for others with exceptionalities. She is the Founder of the nonprofit My Autism Tribe, based in Lexington, KY. Through the DinoSprout book series, Susan's mission is to provide children, parents, and teachers with resources that cultivate healthy conversations in a world of special needs. After spending years in New York City and Los Angeles working in the television and film industry, Susan Mills decided to make roots in her home state of Kentucky. It wasn't until her son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2-1/2 years old that she realized there were many special needs areas that had yet to be addressed. There is a strong need to integrate special needs conversations at a young age, and what better way than through books? Susan wanted to create a way to provide children with both a mirror and a window into the special needs world. A mirror would provide children with special needs to see and learn about themselves. A window would provide children without certain special needs to learn about others. She lives in Lexington, Kentucky, and is married to two-time University of Kentucky NCAA champion basketball player Cameron Mills.
