OverviewTo Borneo and Back: An Encounter with Dietrich Bonhoeffer requires one to confront costly grace. As Bonhoeffer said: ""When Christ calls a man, he bids him to come and die."" This challenge confronted Hipkins when he read Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Discipleship in 1959 and struggled to establish Church of the Savior in a new, affluent suburb of Montgomery, in Cincinnati, Ohio. From a guard post in Germany to a South India field clinic for people afflicted by leprosy, the writer's search for personal service leads through the snake infested jungles of Borneo.
