OverviewDelayed tissue repair is a serious complication of long-term diabetes mellitus. Prior to this study there was no clear evidence as to how diabetes changes skin microvascular blood flow or how these changes influence tissue repair processes in early diabetes. The research undertaken within this project aimed to investigate the factors that are known to cause long-term vascular complications of diabetes and how these factors contribute to early changes in skin microvascular blood flow. The treatment protocols used in this work showed that the action of these factors is reversible in the early stages of diabetes. These same treatments were also effective in improving the repair processes in our model of diabetes. This research raised the possibility that early intervention could prevent microvascular alterations. The information in this book could have significant clinical implications for treating diabetic patients with long-term vascular complications. The results of this study showed a significant improvement in tissue repair processes using the principle of non-invasive and easy to apply treatment protocols, which is worthy of further investigation by medical researchers.
