OverviewPeter Sain ley Berry shows how the Tinkinswood Burial Cairn in the Vale of Glamorgan was positioned with great accuracy by its Neolithic builders 6,000 years ago. Alignments, which Tinkinswood bisects in simple non-random ratios, connect the Burial Cairn to a variety of local geographic features and other ancient sites. Moreover, these alignments and the spacings between sites can be easily measured in kilometres suggesting that the unit used by the Neolithic surveyors was based on the circumference of the earth. A unit of 5 metres (the Neolithic Pole) not only fits all this data but also appears to fit previously recorded measurements of stone circles. Peter Sain ley Berry suggests a method by which the Neolithic people living near the Bristol Channel might have measured the earth's circumference and shows that it is probable that they also evolved and used area measures. He concludes by arguing that all this would have been impossible without writing and mathematics, which skills were probably possessed by the builders of Tinkinswood.
