Jernigan was born in Chattahoochee, Florida in 1923. On December 2, 1940, at the age of 17, he joined the Navy. The outbreak of World War II found him aboard the USS Washington which was soon assigned to convoy duty in the North Atlantic. He was reassigned in August 1942 to the USS Saufley, a new destroyer sailor for the Pacific, which is where he spent the remainder of the war. After the war he married and settled in Chester, Virginia, raising a family of two boys and one girl. In addition to Tin Can Man he wrote Hard Times at Hardaway and Letters to Ann. He is deceased.
