Overview

A valuable resource for understanding revival in the new millenniumIn Times of Renewal Dr. Ian R. Hall shows us that revival is not a new phenomenon, but has been the impetus for church growth and protection from the beginning, and a vital part of our individual spiritual lives. ""Revival is essential to the growth and well-being of both church and society. It determines the barometric pressure governing the spiritual weather of our world."" Dr. Ian R. Hall From Atheist To RevivalistDr. Hall's startling and miraculous journey to his own first revival experience sets the tone by illustrating a basic truth: revival cannot be manufactured by man; only God can bring revival! However, Hall has unearthed from awakenings recorded in the Bible and throughout centuries of church history -including recent spiritual events-a pattern. ""...a solid tool for the assessment of spiritual movements. [Times of Renewal] surely creates hunger for God's fresh visitation in our countries and churches."" Dr. Arto Hämäläinen A must for serious students of the Christian faith worldwide

"Dr. Ian Hall has filled a big gap by his book about revivals. He not only describes how God has given special refreshing times in distinct phases of history in various countries and areas of the world-he offers theological analyses for such visitations of God. Dr. Hall explains the terminology and puts it into the connections of the historical events. He explores the theological roots of revivals in the Old and New Testament. The reader is led through historical revival times, and also offers perspectives to more rarely visited phases like the role of the Nestorian missionaries among the Mongol and Turkic tribes in Central Asia in the 11th century. The book is inspiring and widens the perspective of God's work in different periods of history. Dr. Hall offers a solid tool for the assessment of spiritual movements. It surely creates hunger for God's fresh visitation in our countries and churches. Dr. Arto Hmlinen, Chair of the Pentecostal Commission on Religious Liberty and Africa Pentecostal Mission A meticulous researcher, fine observer, and methodical writer, Dr. Ian Hall is a Pentecostal theologian who has personally undergone the journey of spiritual awakening, transitioning from atheist to Christian minister to theology professor to globe-trotting missionary. As the book's subtitle implies, the author not only delves into the historical context of spiritual awakenings but also uses it to propose a concise yet seminal, Trinitarian-rooted, pneumatically focused theology of revival. Arguing that the ultimate purpose of revival is to guide us back to Pentecost, the final section of the book is of particular value as it addresses critical aspects including the purpose of revival, its catalysts, occurrences, prerequisites, and the pivotal role played by the Holy Spirit. Displaying a unique combination of historical accuracy, theological comprehensiveness, and pneumatological fervor, this book promises to ensure and enliven its readers to both the possibility and the imminence of Pentecost(al) revival. Rev. Dr. Ciprian Gheorghe-Luca, Romanian Pentecostal pastor and public theologian Dr. Ian Hall has written an extremely valuable book on revivals and spiritual awakenings. This comprehensive work reflects a lifetime of research. In addition to all of the important and well-documented historical references, Dr. Hall also shares his personal experiences with revivals and spiritual awakenings, along with a sound biblical and practical theology, giving the reader ample material for spiritual inspiration and personal renewal. You will find here an abundant resource for the college or university classroom or the pulpit of a local church or for any earnest follower of Jesus searching for a closer walk with God. I thoroughly enjoyed the book; I learned much by reading it; and my own heart was inspired to keep on praying, ""Lord, do it again! Lord do it again!"" Dr. Donald G. Meyer, Retired President, University of Valley Forge"
