Tilly's Holiday Unexpected Travel

Overview

This 5000-word short story is set in rural Australia, where thirteen-year-old Tilly learns more about her grandparents' lives than she could have imagined before visiting them. Matilda thought holidaying on her grandparents' sheep property in outback Australia would be fun, but she is bored with no friends to do anything with. She explores Gran's old bottle and rubs the dirt off a bottle with red writing. A storm of wind and dust lands her outside an unusual corner store. Grans knew the store and shared her treasures with Tilly, who was intrigued by an ink well. She rubs and finds herself in a school yard in a uniform she didn't know. Safely home, she avoids touching any more bottles but finds a pair of rusty shears in her grandfather's shed. She lands in a shearing shed where the men are wearing clothes from a different era, and she is dressed like never before. Tilly realises there is more to her family history than she expected.
