OverviewThyroid disorders are common, but they can be treated. About 2 per cent of women have an overactive thyroid gland and about 2 per cent have an underactive thyroid gland. Thyroid problems are 10 times less common in men than in women. But many more people have abnormalities of thyroid function without realising it, some of whom will come to need treatment. This book is for people who have thyroid problems, whether overactivity or underactivity; for those who have been told they have minor thyroid abnormalities and for the families of people with thyroid disorders. Nurses and others who work with people who have thyroid trouble may also find it helpful. The book is written in several sections: the first introduces the thyroid gland and how it works; the second considers the underactive thyroid gland and the third the overactive thyroid gland; the following sections discuss pregnancy, thyroid eye disorders and goitres;; then there is a section discussing other conditions which are more likely to occur in people with thyroid disorders than in those without; finally there is a section about looking after yourself and keeping fit. Throughout I have presented the problems from the perspective of the people who have them, starting with what they may notice wrong, followed by the visit to the doctor, diagnosis and treatment. Then I discuss the complications of the conditions and finally their causes.
