  • Winner of Northeastern Minnesota Book Award (Memoir) 2013

Overview

This book is the story of a young Danish female physician who emigrates to the United States, where as a pediatrician in the 1970s she creates one of the first intensive care unit for newborns in Minnesota. The book contains stories of her experiences as a female doctor in the seventies' United States, of the vulnerable patients and families she works with, and of the evolution of neonatology during her years of practice. After retiring, she works in Cameroon in Africa. In her writing she reflects on her frustrations of working in a developing country, on her difficulty in fully healing her patients, and on how her experiences lead to greater involvement in the development of healthcare in Cameroon.
