Upon completion of reading an excerpt of Land of the Free, I give a standing ovation to the author, Afi Makalani. This article takes the American reader in a virtual conference room where all thoughts and beliefs about our freedoms are placed on the table and examined. Makalani, having the essence of a therapist, addresses each position on the freedoms of speech and self-expression: how Americans choose to protest and how Americans respond to them. Makalani's reflections are logical, non-political, and backed with historical evidence. To the open mind, this well-written article is most enlightening to show the hypocrisy of supporting our first amendment rights, yet criticizing the use of them in response to a non-violent protest. This article clearly explains how patriotism is often measured with a double standard. I found it refreshing and most therapeutic during this time of social and political unrest. Bridgette D.
