OverviewSpinal injuries remain a serious concern for humanity, causing not only pain but also significant limitations in the social activity of the affected individuals. To correct and stabilize spinal fractures, new types of minimally invasive surgical interventions are being developed. One promising direction in this field is balloon kyphoplasty. The essence of the method lies in the percutaneous insertion of a special balloon into the affected vertebra. The balloon is introduced in a compressed condition, and then fluid is injected into it under pressure. The balloon expands within the vertebral body, providing reduction of post-traumatic compression. Subsequently, the balloon is removed, and the created cavity is filled with a paste-like bone cement. Acrylic-based bone cement polymerizes during the operation, ensuring primary stability. The advantages of this method include its minimally invasive, rapid clinical effect, use of local anesthesia, and the possibility of performing the intervention on an outpatient basis. This book will be to interest to orthopedists, rheumatologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and medical students.
