Overview

Thomas Johannes Gottschalk werd geboren op 18 mei 1950 in Bamberg, Duitsland, als zoon van de advocaat Hans Gottschalk en Rutila Kossorz. Hij groeide op in Kulmbach, samen met zijn drie jaar jongere broer Christoph en zijn tien jaar jongere zus Raphaela. Van jongs af aan toonde Thomas al een grote interesse in media en entertainment.Tijdens zijn jeugd was Gottschalk misdienaar in de stadskerk van Kulmbach en behaalde hij in 1971 zijn eindexamen aan het humanistische Markgraf-Georg-Friedrich-Gymnasium. Om zijn studie te financieren, werkte hij als DJ in een lokale dansclub en gaf hij bijles. Dankzij een beurs van het Cusanuswerk kon hij Duits en geschiedenis studeren aan de Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München, waar hij lid werd van de katholieke studentenvereniging KDStV Tuiskonia München.
