I highly recommend this moving page-turning memoir written with devotion to preserve the author's Grandmother's account of her experience surviving Nazi Germany. Meyerowitz, poignantly relates in a beautiful voice not only the historic events, but the emotions and confusion her Grandmother experienced in a world turned upside down. The book is written with very short chapters, that are easy to read and I found myself staying up late to ""just read one more section"". It is a painful tale, but one which needs to be remembered. This very personal narrative is sure to reach the reader's soul and question what would we have done under the same circumstances, as well as our own humanity. - Diane Drey The author, Lauren Port, conveys the unvarnished truth about the Holocaust's brutality in a well-organized format. The very personal and emotional device of creating letters from her Grandma Ruth encourages the reader to absorb the events as they actually occurred. A tense aura surrounds the letters because of the careful chronology in which they appear. The reader may already know some of the religious and traditional facts of Jewish Culture, but it is very moving to actually experience the affects of the Shoah on Ruth over many decades. Lauren Meyerowitz Port grew up learning about the Holocaust from her grandmother Ruth Krautwirth Meyerowitz, who was a survivor. Lauren has dedicated many years to preserving her grandmother's story. She is involved in Jewish organizations to promote Holocaust education and to raise funds for destitute Holocaust survivors today. She holds a master of arts in diplomacy and international relations from Seton Hall University and a bachelor of arts in Spanish from the University of Michigan. She currently works in the field of international trade and resides in New York City with her husband.
