Overview

The aging of the population is the most dominant demographic feature of our century. In the western world chronic diseases are the 'symptoms of old age'. But it is not yet clear how important this will be for functional status in the future. The research reported in this book is part of cross-sectional and follow-up studies in the north of the Netherlands, and includes the impact of thirteen chronic diseases on old peoples' health status: chronic bronchitis, other lung diseases, stroke, back pain, rheumatism, cancer/tumors, nervous system diseases, leg ulcer, thyroid diseases, kidney diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and heart attack. This study is unique because it deals with the association between multiple morbidity and functional status, adaptive mechanisms, the frail elderly, frequent attendance and drug use. In addition, it examines the impact of eating habits on the predictability of stroke. This book will be of interest to general practitioners, researchers, social scientists, policy makers, and health visitors and enhance their understanding of the impact of chronic diseases on aging.
