Overview

".NET is the new Microsoft development platform for the Internet. It's a real software ""runtime"" environment that promises to pave a new way of developing software solutions. Think Microsoft .Net discusses the vision and philosophy behind this new platform. Microsoft is engineering their entire 2001/2002 line of server products with .NET in mind. Thus, an overview of what .NET is - the pros, the cons, what's it really about, how it fits together - will prove indispensable if you are an IT Manger, decision-maker, or developer considering .NET or simply wishing to evaluate the implications of .NET. Think Microsoft .NET is not a how-to book and isn't filled with code examples. What you will take away is a deep understanding of what .NET is and knowledge of the .NET Framework. This comprehension will provide an unbiased, big picture of .NET and will help you determine if .NET is in your future and how best to utilize its technologies. This book provides expert insight into .NET from the production, design, and technical standpoints and serves as a roadmap of its many components, ADO.NET, Visual Studio.NET and web services. Enables IT Managers and developers to answer *What is .N ET all about? *What features does .NET offer? *What is the .NET Framework? Bart A. DePetrillo has worked professionally in the computer software industry for the last 9 years in a range of different positions and with various companies. After earning his Master of Computer Science from the Courant Institute of Mathematics at New York University he began working for ABIT Technology LLC in New York City, a US subsidiary of a leading financial software company, now ABIT AG, located in Meerbusch-Lank, Germany. He worked at ABIT as a developer and eventually as Director of the New York office, where he worked for 4 years until becoming an independent consultant for the ABIT Innovation Group (AIG), the research and development arm of ABIT AG. At AIG he was the responsible for creating ""all things XML"" and documenting the development of a cutting edge ASP server that contained many of the features now more easily implemented using Microsoft .NET. In June of 2000 he and some of his colleagues at the AIG group left to start newtelligence AG where he is responsible for content production, as well as international business development. Bart and newtelligence AG continue to produce customized content on .NET and BizTalk Server 2000 in addition to presenting their material to Microsoft Consulting Services and on behalf of Microsoft world-wide. They also offer courses hosted ""at home"" and frequently appear at major conference events such as Microsoft TechEd, Microsoft Global Briefing, Microsoft Tech Talk, and others."

Author Information

Bart A. DePetrillo has worked professionally in the computer software industry for the last nine years in a range of different positions and with various companies. After earning his Master of Computer Science from the Courant Institute of Mathematics at New York University he began working for the U.S. subsidiary of a leading German financial software company. Bart's career spanned from that of developer to Director of the New York office, where he worked for four years until becoming an independent consultant. In June of 2000 he and some of his former colleagues joined together to start newtelligence AG where he is responsible for content production, as well as international business development. newtelligence AG has worked closely with Microsoft Germany to produce a readiness kit for .NET developers. The Microsoft .NET Developer Readiness Toolkit is a collection of 30 modules, each of which targets a specific area of .NET technology. The modules are designed for consultants and trainers to use to educate developers and get them up to speed on .NET. Each module is comprised of a presentation slide deck (PowerPoint) and speaker notes, both of which are distributable to clients to take home and for reuse and redelivery to customers. The content of the modules varies from overview to in-depth depending on the topic and many of the modules include sample source codes and references to other useful learning material. Of the 17 modules newtelligence AG produced, Bart authored or contributed to .NET Overview, XML, ADO.NET, HTTP, and .NET Framework Library. The other modules newtelligence AG authored include, but are not limited to C#, Visual Basic.NET, ASP.NET, Web Services Overview, Security, Context and Remoting, Reflection, and Managed C++. Bart and newtelligence AG continue to produce customized content on .NET and BizTalk Server 2000 and present their material world-wide, including major conferences such as Microsoft TechEd 2000/2001, SIGS/101 XML One, and Microsoft Global Briefing. They also deliver onsite seminars, as well as host courses at their corporate headquarters.
