Overview

Guard your secrets, for even the shadows have eyes in book one of this epic tale that blends magic, mayhem, and the 'stranger than fiction' medieval era. In 'These Cruel Watchers' we journey to an enchanted empire where monsters quake before men. Princess Lyudmyla could be forgiven for not paying much attention to the cryptic eye that opened on the sun 300 years ago. The same can't be said for the shape-shifting Jinni who lost their powers and were forced into hiding, exile, or worse. Even after centuries of war and dozens of failed prophecies, the eye has hovered there, showing no concern for the chaos below. From the rugged Kievan Rus to the decadent splendor of the Imperial Palace of Elys. 'These Cruel Watchers' follows Lyudmyla, whose acclaim as a falconer and attempts to sabotage her brother's strategic marriage go awry. Her world explodes when she is swept away by a betrayal and forced to live as a prisoner and a pawn to her enemies. Adversaries surround her, a mysterious outlaw appeals for her heart, and there's more to the 'Eye' than meets the eye. Her survival may demand that she embrace the ways of these cruel watchers -- or that she seize their throne. Come, venture beyond the veil but tell no one what you've seen. The Watcher never sleeps.

Author Information

"JD is an author of historical fantasy fiction. His stories blend ancient mythologies with alternative histories set in lesser known eras. He began his writing career in the second grade with short stories about a giant red dog that lazed around and got into mischief due to his immense size. The popular television show put an end to that particular dream, for a time at least. Later ventures into writing took shape as a psychology student at the Virginia Military Institute where he collaborated on research for academic publications. After a brief, yet eventful stint in the United States Navy, Jeffrey returned to Los Angeles to study screenwriting and film directing. He is a voracious reader of historical fiction, podcast junkie, and aspiring renaissance man. JD is a doting father to his daughter, Valentina, and doggy-daddy to his Silver Labrador, Goodie-Goodie. ""Through all this, I've learned that mankind wields the one true power that exists. Belief."""
