OverviewThis title is a collaborative effort by journalists, editors, media academics, freedom of expression activists, researchers, and the governments of Sweden and Norway. T has several objectives. Initially, it was born out of an international conference forming part of worldwide commemorations of the peaceful dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway in 1905. The title assesses the current status of media, human rights and democracy issues in southern Africa. Simultaneously, it explores current debates around those same issues and also identifies critical areas that require the direction and intervention of the Western donor community. The title proceeds to provide recommendations of how donor funding can strategically be directed for the further development of media, increased respect of human rights and the broadening of democratic practice in Africa. The title is an important contribution to current debates on freedom of expression and democratization and will serve as a useful resource for media students and researchers, development assistance organizations and policy makers.
