Therapeutic Group Enactment of Myth: The Mimesis Method

Overview

Therapeutic Group Enactment of Myth puts the depth and power of the world’s great stories in the hands of therapy-group leaders and other clinicians. In this book, readers will learn about a groundbreaking method for using storytelling, guided meditation, and role play to foster a direct and embodied awareness in group therapy. Through numerous examples, the book describes the theoretical framework that guides readers through all aspects of preparing and facilitating a Mimesis workshop. Readers will come away from this book with a deep understanding of how the universal dimensions of myth and story build connections across culture and time, allowing groups to move beyond divisions and projections to find understanding, acceptance, and shared community.

Reviews

“Building on their prior work, Shadow Work and Sacred Space, the authors provide a full explication of the Mimesis method. If a person exists only through their stories and if humanity exists through its myths, then Mimesis is the ideal praxis to dislodge accepted and assigned narratives in order to reveal, and even generate the deeper (most often hidden and unconscious) truths of the individual-society dialectic. Focusing on all aspects of this group work using myth and story, the book fruitfully extends and enriches the work of any mental health practitioner.” Pascal Sauvayre, PhD, training analyst and faculty at the William Alanson White Institute for Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, and Psychology “This unique and impressive book is a practical and invaluable guide to the Mimesis process. The authors have done an exquisite job of integrating deep psychological knowledge with traditional storytelling to describe a group process deeply beneficial to patients and clinicians alike. This is a must-have manual for any clinician interested in deepening group processes for transformative growth.” Robin B. Risler, PsyD, psychoanalyst and clinical training director for the Institute of Relational Psychoanalysis of Philadelphia “Uniquely useful, pre-eminently practical, and commendably comprehensive, this manual masterfully shows how to practice the Mimesis method. It ably addresses the what, why, and how of Mimesis essentials, too. Chock full of supporting theory and examples, along with clear, crisp implementation instructions, this is the definitive work on therapeutic group Mimesis. Bravo!” C. Edward Watkins, Jr., professor of psychology, University of North Texas, and editor of Handbook of Psychotherapy Supervision
