OverviewIn the spring of 2020, two months into the COVID-19 pandemic, theater artists Sheila Callaghan, Kelly Miller, and Meg Miroshnik emailed roughly 900 colleagues across the American theater industry with a single prompt: what does theatre with no theater look like? They asked each artist to create one page of art within a week, using a black-and-white template. 148 artists responded. The submissions span every discipline and format: illustration, poetry, photography, collage, monologue, and more, from actors, playwrights, directors, designers, dramaturgs, composers, choreographers, and literary managers working across the country. All pieces were collected between April and June 2020. The artwork is arranged alphabetically by the artist's last name, with each caption appearing on the following page. The book also includes a reproduction of the original mass email and a series of related web pages that served as the project's invitation. This 2026 Commemorative Hardcover Edition features four new pieces from artists reflecting on the project years later, a new foreword, and material from the pandemic relief fund the makers established to distribute the book's proceeds directly to theater artists in need.
