OverviewThe earliest references to the archaic proto-instrument known as the 'zither' date back a long way, extending as far as biblical accounts in the Old Testament, where it is mentioned in connection with Saul. However, at that time all plucked instruments were referred to as 'zithers'. Based on this shared designation, a close connection can be established internationally with many stringed instruments. The gusli from Russia and the kokle from Latvia are two key instruments closely related to our familiar Alpine zither. The similarities and differences between these instruments are examined, amongst other things, by considering their respective historical aspects, as well as their development and possible playing techniques.
