OverviewIn an effort to curb global warming, the innovators of tomorrow overshot the mark and now the Earth is cooling. The ambitious have adjusted their sights to focus on adaptation to falling temperatures, and a young engineer takes it upon himself to move from New York City to Wyoming in order to develop solutions on the front lines. Torn between a quirky disposition and a stated desire for positive impact, this is a bildungsroman set against a backdrop of mountains, visionaries, and a settlement of forgotten Mongolians; a story about what is gained and what is taken when one yearns to believe that a small group can change the world. Table of ContentsReviewsAn ambitious first novel that demonstrates virtuous talent and challenges us to assess our relationship with every aspect of our environment. Culliton's debut novel held my attention from the first page. It definitely checks all the boxes of a book worth reading! It is smart, entertaining, and thought provoking. Sam, the non-conformist and quixotic narrator, takes the reader on a riveting ride to Wyoming where Sam joins The Yellowstone Group with the sincerest of intentions to help the environment. As he searches for his sense of self and purpose, Sam undergoes profound changes. The setting, the characterizations and the interplay between the characters, as well as the surprise at the end, all keep the story engaging right up to the conclusion. The idealistic narrator, Sam, brings the reader on a journey from a frozen New York to the wild west---a trip facilitated by an eccentric billionaire trying to save the human race. Surrounded by brilliant inventors and scientists, Sam teams up with a local engineer to revolutionise transit in their newly frozen planet. But are the people surrounding him reaching for the same goals? Culliton creates a believable, flawed protagonist; the first person point-of-view allows unrestricted access to his cheeky, creative way of seeing the world. The prose is beautiful and unique; I found myself wanting to highlight passages that linked concepts I'd never before considered, but that seemed very apt having seen them together. Culliton offers particular care to the science in his frozen dystopia, reminiscent of writers like Verne. The cast of characters are vibrant and varied, while the plot has surprising twists throughout the story. The action builds throughout the book, culminating in a page turning ending.
