This writers' handbook aims to advise and support new and more experienced teen and adult writers with a passion for fiction writing and poetry. The author draws on their 35 years as a community workshop leader, tutor and university lecturer in creative writing and covers ways to get started, tapping into the imagination, and a variety of writing workshops suitable for writing groups, students, creative writing tutors and individual writers. The author also discusses their personal writing experience and encourages writers to read well. This book references fiction by successful contemporary authors and examines the various techniques employed.

Author Information

Dorothy Nelson began writing fiction in 1993, coinciding with her entry to the University of Bolton to study for a B.A. degree in Literature where she was later invited back to teach on their new B.A. Creative Writing degree course, which she continued until her retirement in 2012. Her first novel, Shouting Back, was published in 1997 and her second, Passing the Parcel was published in the US in 2010. Her latest work, The Attendant’s Room was published in 2022. She has been Hon Sec to Preston Poets’ Society and Ashton in Makerfield Writers’ & Literary Club for more than 25 years.
