The Word in Time: A Benedictine Reflection on Praying the Liturgy of the Hours

Overview

Benedictine Sister Genevieve Glen offers biblically inspired reflections on the ""work"" of faithful listening and praying the Liturgy of the Hours. In the biblical worldview of the Rule of St. Benedict, the ""ear of the heart"" is the seat of wisdom, the place where we ruminate on life as it unfolds. It is from this kind of listening that we grow into our truth as our Creator intends it to be. In The Word in Time, Sister Genevieve Glen, OSB, offers biblically inspired reflections that explore what may be found through the work of faithful listening. Drawing on a life immersed in monastic prayer, studying, and teaching the Liturgy of the Hours, she reflects on the enduring practice of praying always, praying in time, praying with words, and praying in the Body of Christ. Whether we pray the Liturgy of the Hours alone or in community with others, we are always rereading our own lives' narratives in the light of the story of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ. In The Word in Time, Sister Genevieve's deep connection with Scripture inspires readers to seek glimpses of these stories intertwined behind the texts we pray and the hours we live.

Reviews

""Seasoned practitioners of the Liturgy of the Hours will find here a new taste in the old wine, and those not familiar with this form of prayer will find an engaging introduction, written in lively language from the background of long experience. The poetic nature of the Hours is well explained, and the redemption of the cursing psalms is alone worth the price."" Jerome Kodell, OSB, Subiaco Abbey, Arkansas -- (12/22/2025 12:00:00 AM) ""I know of no book on the Liturgy of the Hours like this one. Sister Genevieve, as an experienced monastic practitioner, welcomes us into her prayer and encounter with God. Work and prayer are interchangeable practices in Benedict's Rule. This book teaches us how to make prayer work and find the God we're seeking."" Sr. Meg Funk, OSB, Our Lady of Grace Monastery, Beech Grove, Indiana -- (12/15/2025 12:00:00 AM) ""Through sacred Scripture, poetry, personal stories, and Benedictine wisdom, Sr. Genevieve's reflection, The Word in Time, entices readers to join the faithful cloud of witnesses to take up the Liturgy of Hours as holy work. Clearly formed by her years in monastic life, she invites us to cooperate God's faithful and fierce recreation of our very selves. However, she does not shrink from addressing the violence in the holy texts, or from approaching a God seemingly vengeful or absent, because she unveils for readers our own brokenness that distorts our listening with the 'ear of the heart'. This hopeful volume will rekindle people's commitment to listen, recognize, praise, and respond to God because of the way Sr. Genevieve models vulnerably and humanely how praying always with fidelity will transform us and the communities of our lives as the Body of Christ."" Alison Benders, PhD, Faculty Emerita, Jesuit School of Theology, Santa Clara University -- (12/15/2025 12:00:00 AM)
