This study shows how control of the plot was achieved by combining the structure of classical tragedy as described by the critic Gustav Freytag with a second structure created through a carefully developed pattern of characters and events, symbols and associations, culminating in an emotional crisis at the point of catastrophe in the Freytag pattern. The second structure is created through actions and qualities expressed through symbols, primarily colors, associated with female characters.
